Category C: International Experience

6 Points: Japan Field School (2023) & Belize Field School (2024)

Japan was a place that interested me but I didn’t know much about before travelling there. This was a Geography class so the purpose was to engage with culture through a walking route we were given as well as field journals to document the way we experienced and saw things. After being in Japan for two weeks I learned so many things about the culture, etiquette, and their lifestyles. We got to meet students at Bunkyo Gakuin University and they taught us a lot about school and their lives. Japan was very clean and felt safe no matter the time of day.

Belize is a very interesting place because of the diverse ecosystems and all of the resources they have. This was a Natural Resource Science course so that was primarily the focus of the course, however being a geography student I took things in a bit differently. I found the Maya culture the most interesting thing about this trip as we got to see Maya ruins, make corn tortillas, and teas from corn while learning about the history. This was something that has been an interest of mine for years now but seeing it in person was absolutely incredible.
