GEOG 1000 Planet Earth – An Introduction to Earth System Science

The purpose of this course is to focus on the four spheres of the environment as well as how humans have impacts on those. The main project for the class was to look at the survival and retreat of a glacier in BC. This was important for my learning in sustainability because it really shows how much of an impact humans have. This made me more aware of changes in the physical environment.

GEOG 1010 People, Places and Landscapes: Introducing Human Geography

The purpose of this course was to look into the connections between people and the environments around them. Taking a spatial behavioural look at places to see the relationships between factors in a place like food production and urbanization and how that impacts sustainability. This course bridges people and places to help understand our impacts and efforts as individuals for promoting sustainability.

GEOG 2020 Weather, Climate and Global Environmental Change

This course takes a scientific approach to different processes like meteorology and climatology. In this course I learned about climate being the long term environmental factors over a period of time and the changes it has faced. Looking into the equations and graphs helped me better understand the changes that have happened overtime and why sustainability is important for the future of the climate.

GEOG 3100 Environment, Resources and Sustainability

This course explores the natural environment as well as the modified environment and how those are viewed. In this course we used tools like a carbon footprint calculator which was really beneficial to me because it helped me understand my individual impact and what I can do to help the environment in regard to sustainability. Tying in the natural environment is important because it shows us what it was and how it has changed because of us humans.

GEOG 3570 Introduction to Social and Behavioural Geography

This course was project based and looked into census data based in Kamloops of different census tracts. One of the factors we focused on was transportation both within as well as to and from the area. This is an important topic because transportation is needed but when it’s sustainable it’s much better for the environment. This course made me think about my ways of transportation as well as where the products I buy are coming from and their carbon footprint.

GEOG 3700:Japan & Wells Gray Field Course

In Japan convenience is something they tend to prioritize because of peoples busy lives. However, this really impacts the environment due to the amount of waste that comes from that. Single use plastic was something I noticed a large accumulation of in our dorm rooms. This really made me think about what I purchase and the impact it has on the environment.

GEOG 4800 Environmental Issues and Policies

This course was based on case studies of various areas to help us understand real life cases and the impact they hold on the environment. A specific topic that left an impression on me was a proposed pipeline project in the Yukon that had severe impacts on the environment, animals, as well as the Indigenous communities. The use of case studies helped my understanding of how sustainability and the environment are involved more in some cases and less in others.
