ANTH 1210 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology

This course looks at different human societies around the world. We learned about different traditions and the cultural significance around them. This helped my learning of other cultures especially since I took it in my first year so it really opened my eyes. This course was a valuable learning experience to understand cross-cultural comparisons.

GEOG 1010 People, Places and Landscapes: Introducing Human Geography

This course focuses on human geography in a way we interact with our environment and places around us. Cultural diversity plays a role in shaping a place which is an important aspect of Geography. This helped my understanding of the places I’m involved in and the environment around me on a local and global scale.

SOCI 2010 Race and Ethnicity

This course focuses on race and ethnicity as social constructions and how they are formed. This course helped my understanding of Canada as a place and how culturally diverse we are. Unlearning racism is something we talked about in this class and this means that racism has been ingrained into our society but us as individuals have to be aware of that and overcome it. Rather than avoiding racism we need to be aware of the issue to work together.

SOCI 2130 Women in Global Perspective

This course focuses on women in a global context and diversity in their lives. One of the main focuses of this course was migrant women coming from the Philippines to North America and the sacrifices they have to make to do this. Family dynamics are altered when the mother has to make this move because she has to leave her family to take care of another. This really opened my eyes as to the sacrifices women make for their families and how that changes many families.

SOCI 3610 Social Inequality

In this course we learned about inequalities such as class, gender, and race and how they are socially constructed. We started at the roots of the issues to understand where it comes from all the way up to issues in today’s society. This timeline helped my learning because I saw where it started and what has gotten better, worse, or stayed the same. This course was a valuable learning experience for me because we covered so many factors that play a part in our daily lives to shape our social positions.
